THE 4 F's OF MAGAZINE DESIGN
- Format - Visual style of the magazine, often a house style is used. This is seen on the front cover and throughout the pages (usually only a small nod to the house style), so the reader can identify with the magazine, and the magazine has a cleaner, more drawn together look, adding professionalism.
- Formula – Content of the magazine, and where it is placed, so the magazine continues to be an enjoyable experience for the target audience. This will establish a genre, therefore gaining and then retaining an audience that the magazine is aimed at.
- Frame – The margins and gutters. This ensures that all pages have continuity (along with format) so that it can be read easily, and different features don’t merge into one.
- Function - What is the magazines job? Will it entertain or inform? Giving a magazine a slogan is a good way to refine the tone of the magazine, so the target audience know if it’s for them or not.
